I AM A REFUGEE WITHOUT A REFUGE

I AM A REFUGEE. WHO IS MY REFUGE? JONAH’S STORY

I am a Refugee without a Refuge. I am surviving inside the belly of a Giant Fish or Whale.

I left India on January 10, 1984, in search of my Refuge, in my quest to reach the Final Destination of my Life. I need Protection. I need Shelter. I need the Sanctuary. I need the Grace, Mercy, and Compassion of the Power which can grant me Asylum. I am a Refugee without a Refuge.

I am a Refugee. Who is my Refuge?

Prophet Jonah was caught up in the belly of a giant fish or the Whale just for three days. He prayed to God and God relented to release Jonah at the destination God has chosen.

Just like Jonah, I am caught up in the belly of a giant fish or the Whale with no Freedom and no Free Will. I live but I survive as a Prisoner, a mere Slave, a Servant, and a Serf who lives without any choice of his own.

I am a Refugee. Who is my Refuge?

Just like Jonah, I declare, “In God We Trust,” the National Motto of a Superpower, a Giant among the Free Nations of the World. Salvation comes from the LORD. If I must preach God’s message to my Enemy, I ask God to release me on the shores of my Enemy’s Territory. I am just a Slave in a Free Country and I have no Freedom to move on my own accord.

The story of Jonah and the Whale, one of the oddest accounts in the Bible, opens with God speaking to Jonah, son of Amittai, commanding him to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh.

Synopsis

Jonah found God’s order unbearable. Not only was Nineveh known for its wickedness, but it was also the capital of the Assyrian empire, one of Israel’s fiercest enemies. Jonah, a stubborn fellow, did just the opposite of what he was told. He went down to the seaport of Joppa and booked passage on a ship to Tarshish, heading directly away from Nineveh. The Bible tells us Jonah “ran away from the Lord.”

In response, God sent a violent storm, which threatened to break the ship to pieces. The terrified crew cast lots, determining that Jonah was responsible for the storm. Jonah told them to throw him overboard. First, they tried rowing to shore, but the waves got even higher. Afraid of God, the sailors finally tossed Jonah into the sea, and the water immediately grew calm. The crew made a sacrifice to God, swearing vows to him.

Instead of drowning, Jonah was swallowed by a great fish, which God provided. In the belly of the whale, Jonah repented and cried out to God in prayer. He praised God, ending with the eerily prophetic statement, “Salvation comes from the Lord.” (Jonah 2:9, NIV)

Jonah was in the giant fish for three days. God commanded the whale, and it vomited the reluctant prophet onto dry land. This time Jonah obeyed God. He walked through Nineveh proclaiming that in forty days the city would be destroyed. Surprisingly, the Ninevites believed Jonah’s message and repented, wearing sackcloth and covering themselves in ashes. God had compassion on them and did not destroy them.

Again Jonah questioned God because Jonah was angry that Israel’s enemies had been spared. When Jonah stopped outside the city to rest, God provided a vine to shelter him from the hot sun. Jonah was happy with the vine, but the next day God provided a worm that ate the vine, making it wither. Growing faint in the sun, Jonah complained again.

God scolded Jonah for being concerned about a vine, but not about Nineveh, which had 120,000 lost people. The story ends with God expressing concern even about the wicked.

Points of Interest

  • God commands everything in his Creation, from the weather to a whale, to carry out his plan. God is in control.
  • Jonah spent the same amount of time—three days—inside the whale as Jesus Christ did in the tomb. Christ also preached salvation to the lost.
  • It’s not important whether it was a great fish or a whale that swallowed Jonah. The point of the story is that God can provide a supernatural means of rescue when his people are in trouble.
  • Some scholars believe the Ninevites paid attention to Jonah because of his bizarre appearance. They speculate that the whale’s stomach acid bleached Jonah’s hair, skin, and clothing a ghostly white.
  • Jesus did not consider the book of Jonah to be a fable or myth. While modern skeptics may find it impossible that a man could survive inside a great fish for three days, Jesus compared himself to Jonah, showing that this prophet existed and that the story was historically accurate.

Question for Reflection

Jonah thought he knew better than God. But in the end, he learned a valuable lesson about the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness, which extends beyond Jonah and Israel to all people who repent and believe. Is there some area of your life in which you are defying God, and rationalizing it? Remember that God wants you to be open and honest with him. It’s always wise to obey the One who loves you most.

In my analysis, the Dalai Lama’s proposed meeting with Xi Jinping in New Delhi during 2014 was not approved by the United States. It must be understood that the asylum granted to the Dalai Lama has certain terms and conditions approved by the United States. The Dalai Lama is not free to act unilaterally without getting approval of the United States and India. The Great Tibet Problem stays on the Back Burner while Red China continues her policy of Expansionism.

Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to meet the Dalai Lama during a 2014 visit to India but a "cautious" Delhi did not allow it to happen, a new book has claimed.

The 83-year-old Buddhist monk has made India his home since fleeing the Tibetan capital Lhasa in 1959 — and has been a thorn in Beijing’s side ever since.

"In 2014, when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Delhi for talks with Prime Minister Modi, I requested a meeting with him," author Sonia Singh quotes the Dalai Lama as saying.

"President Xi Jinping agreed, but the Indian government was cautious about the meeting, so it didn’t happen," according to excerpts from the book published Wednesday.

In the book "Defining India – Through Their Eyes", Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was concerned about maintaining good relations with China.

The Dalai Lama’s personal spokesman Tenzin Taklha told AFP he didn’t have any comments to make, without either confirming or denying the contents in the book.

The Dalai Lama set up a government-in-exile in Dharamsala in northern India and launched a campaign to reclaim Tibet that gradually evolved into an appeal for greater autonomy — the so-called "middle way" approach.

India, which gave him asylum in 1959, has supported the Tibetan leader but of late the government has maintained a distance, citing diplomatic sensitivities.

Singh, the editorial director of NDTV news channel, says the meeting had the "promise to change the course of China-Tibet relations" if it had been allowed to happen.

The Dalai Lama is also quoted as saying he had "very good relations" with Modi, who is seeking a second term in the ongoing general election.

"He is quite an active Indian prime minister, continuously visiting many countries. That, I admire at his age."

A global symbol of peace, the Dalai Lama was briefly hospitalized for a chest infection in Delhi last month.

The book is set to be released on May 20.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION: DEMAND FOR INVESTIGATION OF PRESIDENT NIXON’S FOREIGN POLICY

CULTURAL REVOLUTION: DEMAND FOR INVESTIGATION OF PRESIDENT NIXON’S FOREIGN POLICY

Cultural Revolution: Demand for Investigation of President Nixon’s Foreign Policy.

I ask the US citizens to demand the investigation of President Nixon’s Foreign Policy that initiated the US-China relations in 1971-72 without concern for the Crimes Against Humanity described by Communist China as ‘Cultural Revolution’.

Designed by Mao Zedong to preserve true Communist ideology by removing capitalist and traditional elements from society in China. Was a move to recover political power by Mao. The movement insisted that revisionists, people in China who promoted capitalism, had to be removed through violent class struggle. Red Guard was a movement of Chinese Youth to perpetuate these goals. Millions of people were persecuted, cultural icons were destroyed, religious sites were ransacked.

Cultural Revolution – HISTORY

Clipped from: https://www.history.com/topics/china/cultural-revolution

In 1966, China’s Communist leader Mao Zedong launched what became known as the Cultural Revolution in order to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. Believing that current Communist leaders were taking the party, and China itself, in the wrong direction, Mao called on the nation’s youth to purge the “impure” elements of Chinese society and revive the revolutionary spirit that had led to victory in the civil war 20 decades earlier and the formation of the People’s Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution continued in various phases until Mao’s death in 1976, and its tormented and violent legacy would resonate in Chinese politics and society for decades to come.

The Cultural Revolution Begins

In the 1960s, Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong came to feel that the current party leadership in China, as in the Soviet Union, was moving too far in a revisionist direction, with an emphasis on expertise rather than on ideological purity. Mao’s own position in government had weakened after the failure of his “Great Leap Forward” (1958-60) and the economic crisis that followed. Mao gathered a group of radicals, including his wife Jiang Qing and defense minister Lin Biao, to help him attack current party leadership and reassert his authority.

Mao launched the so-called Cultural Revolution (known in full as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution) in August 1966, at a meeting of the Plenum of the Central Committee. He shut down the nation’s schools, calling for a massive youth mobilization to take current party leaders to task for their embrace of bourgeois values and lack of revolutionary spirit. In the months that followed, the movement escalated quickly as the students formed paramilitary groups called the Red Guards and attacked and harassed members of China’s elderly and intellectual population. A personality cult quickly sprang up around Mao, similar to that which existed for Josef Stalin, with different factions of the movement claiming the true interpretation of Maoist thought.

Lin Biao’s Role in the Cultural Revolution

During this early phase of the Cultural Revolution (1966-68), President Liu Shaoqi and other Communist leaders were removed from power. (Beaten and imprisoned, Liu died in prison in 1969.) With different factions of the Red Guard movement battling for dominance, many Chinese cities reached the brink of anarchy by September 1967, when Mao had Lin send army troops in to restore order. The army soon forced many urban members of the Red Guards into rural areas, where the movement declined. Amid the chaos, the Chinese economy plummeted, with industrial production for 1968 dropping 12 percent below that of 1966.

In 1969, Lin was officially designated Mao’s successor. He soon used the excuse of border clashes with Soviet troops to institute martial law. Disturbed by Lin’s premature power grab, Mao began to maneuver against him with the help of Zhou Enlai, China’s premier, splitting the ranks of power atop the Chinese government. In September 1971, Lin died in an airplane crash in Mongolia, apparently while attempting to escape to the Soviet Union. Members of his high military command were subsequently purged, and Zhou took over greater control of the government. Lin’s brutal end led many Chinese citizens to feel disillusioned over the course of Mao’s high-minded “revolution,” which seemed to have dissolved in favor of ordinary power struggles.

Cultural Revolution Comes to an End

Chairman Mao Tse-tung is recognized as the architect of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. It will be just to charge him with Crimes against Humanity.

Zhou acted to stabilize China by reviving the educational system and restoring numerous former officials to power. In 1972, however, Mao suffered a stroke; in the same year, Zhou learned he had cancer. The two leaders threw their support to Deng Xiaoping (who had been purged during the first phase of the Cultural Revolution), a development opposed by the more radical Jiang and her allies, who became known as the Gang of Four. In the next several years, Chinese politics teetered between the two sides. The radicals finally convinced Mao to purge Deng in April 1976, a few months after Zhou’s death, but after Mao died that September, a civil, police and military coalition pushed the Gang of Four out. Deng regained power in 1977 and would maintain control over the Chinese government for the next 20 years.

Some 1.5 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and millions of others suffered imprisonment, seizure of property, torture or general humiliation. The Cultural Revolution’s short-term effects may have been felt mainly in China’s cities, but its long-term effects would impact the entire country for decades to come. Mao’s large-scale attack on the party and system he had created would eventually produce a result opposite to what he intended, leading many Chinese to lose faith in their government altogether.

To renew the revolutionary spirit… Mao’s Red Guards would raid houses looking for four olds old custom, old culture, old habit, or old ideas. Mao declared the Chinese people ‘blank’ Before the drama had played itself out, it consumed, physically or spiritually, virtually all of the original promoters as well as many of its intended victims.

KNOWLEDGE AND RATIONALITY: THE CONCEPT OF WHOLE NIHILISM

KNOWLEDGE AND RATIONALITY: THE CONCEPT OF  WHOLE NIHILISM

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Nihilism: German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche(1844 to 1900) often thought of his writings as struggles with "Nihilism." In his view, Knowledge and Rationality in themselves do nothing to justify Human Existence and do nothing to justify the existence of the World.
Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche(1844 to 1900) often thought of his writings as struggles with “Nihilism.” In his view, Knowledge and Rationality in themselves do nothing to justify Human Existence and do nothing to justify the existence of the World. I appreciate this thought shared by Nietzsche and would like to keep my independence by contesting his views on Human Existence.

Nietzsche often thought of his writings as struggles with Nihilism. In his view, Knowledge and Rationality in themselves do nothing to justify Human Existence and do nothing to justify the existence of the World. I agree and at the same time, I disagree with him. I would like to share my concept of “Whole Nihilism” to contest his views on Nihilism. In my opinion, Nietzsche has failed to make the following distinctions and hence failed to establish his thesis of Nihilism. The fundamental distinctions that we need to consider are:

1. The distinction between Acquired Knowledge and Innate Knowledge,

2. The distinction between Human Essence and Human Existence,

3. The distinction between Human Behavior and Human Nature,

4. The distinction between Human Identity and Human Individuality, and

5. The distinction between a Mortal Being and a Created Being.

Firstly, I would like to describe Nietzsche’s thoughts on Nihilism and explain his views on this subject.

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Nihilism: In the emergence of 19th-century "POSITIVISM", Nietzsche predicted the ushering of a new era that dissolves the religious and philosophical absolutes. Nietzsche visualized the collapse of the metaphysical and theological foundations and sanctions for traditional morality. The decadence of the sustaining values of Western Civilization would leave behind a pervasive sense of purposelessness and meaninglessness. And the triumph of meaninglessness is the triumph of Nihilism.
Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. In the emergence of 19th-century “POSITIVISM”, Nietzsche predicted the ushering of a new era that dissolves the religious and philosophical absolutes.

“POSITIVISM” is a system of philosophy basing Knowledge solely on the data of sense experience. It is a system of philosophy originated by French philosopher Auguste Comte(1798-1857) who demanded that Knowledge must be exclusively based on observable scientific facts and their relation to each other, and he rejected speculations about or search for ultimate origins. Positivism as a theory of Knowledge is fundamentally flawed for it fails to acknowledge the existence of Innate Knowledge. For example, the genetic information and biological information implanted in the living cells is the Knowledge that is used to perform a variety of complex, sequential, goal-oriented living functions. In the absence of this Innate Knowledge, life and existence are simply impossible. For this reason, I define Life as Knowledge in Action. Having said this, I recognize that in the 19th-century Positivism, Nietzsche had visualized the emergence of an age that dissolved the religious and philosophical absolutes. Nihilism as a philosophical doctrine denies the existence of any basis for Knowledge or Truth. Nihilism is often stated as the belief that there is no meaning or purpose in Human Existence.

Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. What is Reality and What is Appearance? What is Timeless and What is Temporal? Can mind, and senses explain the reality of this World?

Nihilism demands the rejection of customary beliefs to religion, and morality. Nietzsche used the term Nihilism to describe the devaluation of the highest values or the ‘ascetic ideal’ postulated by traditional philosophy and religion. Nietzsche was apparently preoccupied with the origin and function of values in human life. In his view, life neither possesses nor lacks intrinsic value and yet is always being evaluated. He concluded that the evaluations of life must be read as symptoms of the condition of the evaluator. It seems that Nietzsche wants to suggest that any evaluation of life is simply a matter of subjective opinion and there is no objective basis for evaluation of human life.

Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. What is Reality and What is Appearance? What is Timeless and What is Temporal? Can mind, and senses explain the reality of this World?

I find a problem with Nietzsche’s view and want to state that the fact of life, the condition of life, and the state of life do always have an objective basis and the objective basis of life could be verified by other scientific observers and by experimentation. Nietzsche probed the fundamental cultural values of Western philosophy, religion, and morality which he characterized as expressions of the ascetic ideal. Nietzsche claims that the ascetic ideal is born when suffering becomes endowed with ultimate significance. The Judeo-Christian tradition makes suffering tolerable by interpreting it as God’s intention and as an occasion for atonement. In Nietzsche’s opinion, Christianity makes a deceptive claim by attaching cosmic significance to each individual’s life and death. Similarly, Nietzsche points out that traditional philosophy expressed the ascetic ideal when it privileged soul over body, mind over senses, duty over desire, reality over appearance, and the timeless over the temporal. Nietzsche attached no merit in Christianity’s promise of Salvation to the Sinner who repents and to the same extent he ridicules the promise of Emancipation or Enlightenment offered by a philosophy to the seekers of its Knowledge. Nietzsche makes a valid point in his statement about religion and philosophy which make the assumption that existence requires explanation, justification, and some form of expiation by either paying a penalty or by atonement. Nietzsche argued that both religion and philosophy denigrated experience in favor of the true world. He viewed both as symptoms of a declining life in distress. In the decadence, in the decline and in the eventual collapse of the metaphysical and theological foundations and sanctions of traditional morality, Nietzsche apprehends a huge void, a pervasive sense of purposelessness, and meaninglessness. And the triumph of meaninglessness is the triumph of Nihilism. From this perspective, Nietzsche claims that “God is Dead.”

THE DOCTRINE OF WHOLE NIHILISM:

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Whole Nihilism: Man is a Created Being. The Conception of Human Life involves the use of a Creative mechanism that ensures the birth of a human Individual who exists with a unique, distinctive, one of its own kind of Genome that never existed in the past, and will not again exist in the future.
Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. Man is a Created Being. The Conception of Human Life involves the use of a Creative mechanism that ensures the birth of a human Individual who exists with a unique, distinctive, one of its own kind of Genome that never existed in the past, and will not again exist in the future. Life can only be explained as the Unity of Matter, Energy, and Soul functioning in Space under the influence called Time which makes the man a Mortal Being.

At a fundamental level, man has no ability to attach meaning, purpose, or values to his own human existence. The religious doctrines, the different schools of philosophy do not provide the basic Knowledge and information that is used by the fertilized Egg Cell that divides, multiplies, grows, and develops into the complex, multicellular human organism. Man has no choice other than that of existing as an Individual with Individuality. Each human being arrives into the World as a Created Being and man has no ability to create a replica of this one of its own kind of living object. The fertilized Egg Cell does not depend upon Knowledge that is exclusively acquired from Sensory Experience. To establish the fact of human life, the fertilized Egg Cell does not depend upon learning from Knowledge contained in books or imparted by educational experience. The ‘ascetic ideal’ stated by Nietzsche has no relevance and has no significance as human life is not guided by those metaphysical, or theological values. Man cannot simply choose to exist by defining his Essence through his actions or things he wants to do. The fact of Existence must always precede the ability to describe the attributes called Essence. The fertilized Egg Cell proceeds to perform its functions without any concerns about the meaning, purpose, or significance of the Life that it establishes as a Physical, Objective Reality. Human Knowledge and Human Rationality are not the requirements for establishing the fact, the state, and the condition called Human Existence. To the same extent, it may be said that man is a Mortal Being as his Human Existence in Space is operated under the influence of Time and not by Human Knowledge and Rationality.

Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. What is Reality and What is Appearance? What is Timeless and What is Temporal? Can mind, and senses explain the reality of this World?

The man may never know the distinction between Reality and Appearance as he ceases to exist in the absence of an influence called Illusion. Man’s physical existence on planet Earth has a cosmic significance as Human Existence depends upon an extraterrestrial or Cosmic source of Energy. The external source of energy required for Life is not found on planet Earth and it has to be continuously supplied. This source of external Energy does not depend upon man’s ability to find meaning or purpose in his own existence. The concept of ‘Whole Nihilism’ describes the fact, the reality, and the truth of Human Existence without any concern for meaning or purpose for that Existence.

Knowledge and Rationality: The concept of Whole Nihilism. What is Reality and What is Appearance? What is Timeless and What is Temporal? Can mind, and senses explain the reality of this World?

Nietzsche in his most celebrated book ‘Thus Spake Zarathustra’ introduced the concepts of the Superman or Superior Man and the Will to Power. The basic conception of  Thus Spoke Zarathustra asks the question: “How well disposed of would a person have to become to himself and to life to crave nothing more fervently than the infinite repetition without alternation, of each and every moment?” Nietzsche says, the person who could accept recurrence without self-deception or evasion would be a superhuman being or “UBERMENSCH”, a Superman whose distance from the ordinary man is greater than the distance between man and ape. This Superior Man would not be a product of long evolution; rather, he would emerge when any man with superior potential completely masters himself and strikes off conventional Christian “Herd Mentality” to create his own values, which are completely rooted in life on this Earth. Nietzsche attacked Christianity and Democracy as moralities for the “Weak Herd”. He argued for the “Natural Aristocracy” of the Superman who driven by the ‘Will to Power’ celebrates life on Earth rather than sanctifying it for some heavenly reward. Such a heroic man of merit has the courage to live “dangerously” and thus rise above the masses, developing his natural capacity for the creative use of passion. Nietzsche’s goal was a “Caesar with Christ’s Soul.”

THE CONCEPT OF “BHAVANAJAGAT”:

WholeDude - WholeDesigner - Superman: Nietzsche's concept of Superman, Superior Man, or "UBERMENSCH" is based on the Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence. In the concept of 'BHAVANAJAGAT' the world or 'JAGAT' exists in a constant state of motion. Fundamentally, there is no possibility of the infinite repetition without alteration of each and every moment as visualized by Nietzsche.

Nietzsche’s concept of Superman, Superior Man or “UBERMENSCH” is based on his doctrine of Eternal Recurrence. He visualized the possibility of the infinite repetition without alteration of each and every moment. In my concept of “BHAVANAJAGAT”, the term ‘JAGAT’ refers to planet Earth which exists in a state of constant motion without giving the possibility of the infinite repetition without alteration of each and every moment. Man’s thoughts, ideas, and the power of imagination have no effect on the reality of planet Earth and its nature of existence. Earth churns each future moment into a past moment without ever giving the man the opportunity to know the existence of any present moment. Each moment in the life of planet Earth is a new moment and there is no infinite repetition of any given or recognized moment. Man has to recognize the basic reality about Earth where there can never be two identical moments. “BHAVANAJAGAT” uses the term ‘BHAVANA’ to describe the Unchanging Principle that establishes human existence in a constantly changing world. For man has no power to experience the repetition of any single moment during his entire period of physical existencethere is no possibility of man evolving into a Superman, Superior Man, or “UBERMENSCH”. Nietzsche’s concept is fundamentally flawed; his doctrine of Eternal Recurrence is a simple product of his mental imagination and it has no correspondence with any external reality. In fact, man has no physical or mental power to establish his own existence on Earth. Man has no intrinsic superior potential to master himself. Man is designed to exist in a constantly changing world without any potential to govern or rule the functions of the independent cells that constitute his body.

The Concept of Bhavanajagat refutes The Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence.

I ask my readers to make the distinction between Budget Deficit and Foreign Debt. I describe the phrase ‘The Clinton Curse’ from my reading the Book of Deuteronomy which specifically mentions the Curse relating to a debt owed to foreign nations.

The concept of Spiritual well being always includes the dimension of the physical or the material well being of the man. In the present times, the physical or the material well being of the man always includes the concern about fair and just access to the economic resources to provide for the daily necessities of life particularly during old age after the attainment of the legally determined full retirement age.

In my analysis, ‘The Clinton Curse’ demands the Repeal of Bill Clinton’s Public Law called PRWORA or The Welfare Reform Act of 1996.

SURPRISE! The budget deficit is soaring! 🚀🚀🚀

The Material Basis of Spirituality Science. The Clinton Curse. A Balanced Budget vs Foreign Debt.

“US budget deficit running 15% higher than a year ago.”

The story cites this monthly report from the Treasury Department detailing these few eye-popping facts:

1) The budget deficit grew $146.9 million in the month of March alone.
2) The deficit for this fiscal year is now $691 billion — a 15% increase (or roughly $100 billion) from where we were at this point in 2018.
3) Treasury is projecting that the deficit will surge over $1 trillion by the end of the fiscal year in September.

To which, our politicians have responded: 😒

“Nobody cares,” White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney reportedly told a group of Republicans who wondered why President Donald Trump wasn’t going to mention the ever-growing deficit in his State of the Union Speech earlier this year.

That’s a massive change from where Trump, Mulvaney and the rest of the Republican Party were on the dangers of debt and deficits just a few years ago. Here’s Trump talking to Sean Hannity in 2016 about how easily he will balance the federal budget:

“It can be done. … It will take place and it will go relatively quickly. … If you have the right people, like, in the agencies and the various people that do the balancing … you can cut the numbers by two pennies and three pennies and balance a budget quickly and have a stronger and better country.”

So, well, it hasn’t turned out that way. At all.

Here’s the kicker: Trump isn’t likely to pay a price — either within his own party or the broader electorate — for the soaring deficit. Less than 50% of people in a January Pew poll said that lowering the federal deficit should be a top priority of Washington policymakers. That’s down, rapidly, from 72% who said the same earlier this decade.

The Point: Deficits have lost their salience as a political issue. But that doesn’t mean they are going away. And, at some point, our political (and economic) systems will be forced to deal with our growing mountain of debt.

How the U.S. Deficit and Debt Are Different?

The U.S. budget deficit was $211 billion in August 2018. That’s much lower than the record high of $1.4 trillion reached in FY 2009

The U.S. debt exceeded $22 trillion on February 11, 2019. That’s more than triple the $6 trillion debt in 2000.

What is Foreign Debt?

Foreign debt is an outstanding loan or set of loans that one country owes to another country or institutions within that country. Foreign debt also includes obligations to international organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank or Inter-American Development Bank. Total foreign debt can be a combination of short-term and long-term liabilities. Also known as external debt, these outside obligations can be carried by governments, corporations or private households of a country.
In fact, the national debt went from $4.4 Trillion at the end of 1993 to almost $5.7 Trillion at the end of 2000, U.S. Treasury data shows, a 28 percent increase in the debt over this time when our nation supposedly was running a balanced budget.
The reason for the confusion is that the reported budget deficit/surplus does not take into account new debt being incurred by the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds and other government loan programs. So, when the budget appeared to have gone down by $69 billion in 1998, the national debt increased by $109 billion, similarly, in 1999, the budget surplus appeared to be $126 billion, the actual national debt rose from just under $5.5 trillion to just over $5.6 trillion.

The Chinese were yesterday using planes and some fifty thousand troops, including paratroops, to search the Tibetan mountain passes for the Dalai Lama. But according to reports from Kalimpong, in North-east India, the Tibetan religious leader, moving only by night, was expected to cross the frontier within a few days.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Mr. Silun Lukhangwa, a former Tibetan Premier, said it was hoped to send a delegation to the United Nations to protest against Chinese action in his country. He was speaking after two Tibetan groups had appealed for Indian aid in the crisis in an interview with Mr. Nehru. An Indian official press release merely said: “Mr. Nehru spoke to them briefly, expressing the hope that the present difficulties in Tibet would end peacefully. He made it clear that India was not in a position to intervene and in fact, would not like to take any steps which might aggravate the situation there.”

The Dalai Lama is accompanied on his flight by his mother and sisters, as well as most members of the Tibetan Cabinet, it was learned yesterday. His progress on the 200-mile trek to safety is slow, but it was believed in Kalimpong yesterday that reports that he had been injured in a fall were incorrect. The territory through which he is believed to be moving is the roadless mountainous region of the Tibetan plateau, south-east of Lhasa, bordering Bhutan and the Indian North-east Frontier Agency. The Indian north-east frontier region has been closed to anyone without a permit, and it was stated in New Delhi that no permits could be issued at present.

Reports said the Chinese were dropping paratroopers in an effort to intercept the Dalai Lama. Other troops were going from village to village and monastery to monastery “harassing” inhabitants and monks to try to extort information about him. Strong cordons of Chinese soldiers were being thrown around many monasteries, including the one at Rongbuk, near Mount Everest.

The Tibetan delegation gave Mr. Nehru a memorandum asking him:

1. To lend his active support in securing the personal safety of the Dalai Lama.

2. To send immediately a mercy mission to Tibet with medical supplies.

3. To sponsor the Tibetan cause before the United Nations.

4. To permit Tibetan refugees to cross over freely into India.

It was thought in New Delhi that Mr. Nehru might well pass on the memorandum to the Chinese for their information. The Tibetan groups’ leader, Mr. Lukhangwa, told reporters: “The Dalai Lama’s wishes are the wishes of the people of Tibet. Whatever he says, we will follow him.”

U.S. Withdraws from Vietnam-History

1973

The U.S. withdraws from Vietnam

March 29. U.S. withdraws from Vietnam

Two months after the signing of the Vietnam peace agreement, the last U.S. combat troops leave South Vietnam as Hanoi frees the remaining American prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. America’s direct eight-year intervention in the Vietnam War was at an end. In Saigon, some 7,000 U.S. Department of Defense civilian employees remained behind to aid South Vietnam in conducting what looked to be a fierce and ongoing war with communist North Vietnam.

In 1961, after two decades of indirect military aid, U.S. President John F. Kennedy sent the first large force of U.S. military personnel to Vietnam to bolster the ineffectual autocratic regime of South Vietnam against the communist North. Three years later, with the South Vietnamese government crumbling, President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered limited bombing raids on North Vietnam, and Congress authorized the use of U.S. troops. By 1965, North Vietnamese offensives left President Johnson with two choices: escalate U.S. involvement or withdraw. Johnson ordered the former, and troop levels soon jumped to more than 300,000 as U.S. air forces commenced the largest bombing campaign in history.

During the next few years, the extended length of the war, the high number of U.S. casualties, and the exposure of U.S. involvement in war crimes, such as the massacre at My Lai, helped turn many in the United States against the Vietnam War. The communists’ Tet Offensive of 1968 crushed U.S. hopes of an imminent end to the conflict and galvanized U.S. opposition to the war. In response, Johnson announced in March 1968 that he would not seek reelection, citing what he perceived to be his responsibility in creating a perilous national division over Vietnam. He also authorized the beginning of peace talks.

In the spring of 1969, as protests against the war escalated in the United States, U.S. troop strength in the war-torn country reached its peak at nearly 550,000 men. Richard Nixon, the new U.S. president, began U.S. troop withdrawal and “Vietnamization” of the war effort that year, but he intensified bombing. Large U.S. troop withdrawals continued in the early 1970s as President Nixon expanded air and ground operations into Cambodia and Laos in attempts to block enemy supply routes along Vietnam’s borders. This expansion of the war, which accomplished a few positive results, led to new waves of protests in the United States and elsewhere.

Finally, in January 1973, representatives of the United States, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong signed a peace agreement in Paris, ending the direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. Its key provisions included a cease-fire throughout Vietnam, the withdrawal of U.S. forces, the release of prisoners of war, and the reunification of North and South Vietnam through peaceful means. The South Vietnamese government was to remain in place until new elections were held, and North Vietnamese forces in the South were not to advance further nor be reinforced.

However, the agreement was little more than a face-saving gesture by the U.S. government. Even before the last American troops departed on March 29, the communists violated the cease-fire, and by early 1974 full-scale war had resumed. At the end of 1974, South Vietnamese authorities reported that 80,000 of their soldiers and civilians had been killed in fighting during the year, making it the costliest of the Vietnam War.

On April 30, 1975, the last few Americans still in South Vietnam were airlifted out of the country as Saigon fell to communist forces. North Vietnamese Colonel Bui Tin, accepting the surrender of South Vietnam later in the day, remarked, “You have nothing to fear; between Vietnamese, there are no victors and no vanquished. Only the Americans have been defeated.” The Vietnam War was the longest and most unpopular foreign war in U.S. history and cost 58,000 American lives. As many as two million Vietnamese soldiers and civilians were killed.
