SPIRITUALISM – THE COLORS OF LIFE:

Spiritualism – The Colors of Life: Sir Isaac Newton(1642-1727),English mathematician, physicist, and natural philosopher was the first to explain what he called “the permanent colours of natural bodies.”

I would like to begin with a special tribute to Sir Isaac Newton who had discovered that white light is composed of every color in the spectrum. No single function can fully explain the coloration of living things. We need to integrate the optical, visual, physiological functions of biological coloration and I would like to carefully suggest the spiritual dimension of color as I am not  convinced about the role of color in what had been described as “Natural Selection.” Color plays an important role in every aspect of life. Most of us are familiar with coloration changes; the physiological, seasonal, age-related changes in color that are regulated by environmental stimuli such as light and temperature, coloration change due to emotions like excitement, and hormonal changes that are related to color function. Graying hair is a familiar badge of the elderly. The brilliant colors produced by a prism is an optical phenomenon caused by diffraction or dispersion, or interference of light. However, the understanding of color involves not only physics, but physiology and psychology as well. I would like to add the dimension that I often describe as ‘Spiritualism’ to obtain a greater understanding of color as a function of living things.

WHAT IS COLOR?

Whole Dude - Whole Colors: What is Color? White Light is composed of every color in the Spectrum. But, color is more than an optical function.

Whole Dude – Whole Colors: What is Color? White Light is composed of every color in the Spectrum. But, color is more than an optical function.

Color is a sensation that is aroused when light falls on the retina of the eye. Color is the visual effect resulting from the eye’s ability to distinguish the different wavelengths or frequencies of light. The apparent color of an object depends on the wavelength of the light that it reflects. Light may originate directly from a light source or as reflected light. Color perception depends on the different degrees to which various wavelengths of light stimulate the eye. In white light, an opaque object that reflects all wavelengths appears white and the object that absorbs all wavelengths appears black. White light is perceived as colorless as only a neutral sensation is aroused by it. Any three primary or spectral colors can be combined in various proportions to produce any other color sensation. The ‘additive mixing’ involves combining colored lights. A painter uses a process called ‘subtractive mixing’ to generate colors when pigments are combined to produce the desired visual effect. It must be noted that a strict definition of color is difficult as different observers attach different meanings. The chemist is conscious of color as a quality concerning a pigment or a dye. The psychologist describes color in terms of visual perception, and this perception is further modified by human civilization that attaches meanings, qualities, feelings, moods, and other special values to the colors perceived. The physicist may describe color in terms of qualities such as the wavelength of light, its intensity or brightness, and its hue, a particular shade or tint of a given color.

Spiritualism - The Colors of Life: What is Color? The answer depends upon the perspective of the person who may provide the answer to that question. But, it is important to know that colors are generated by either 'Additive', or 'Subtractive Mixing.

BIOLOGICAL COLORATION:

Animals have distinctive color patterns that seem to play an important role to support their existence in a given ecological community that shares a common physical environment. The color may serve the purpose of protection by concealing the organism from predators or its own prey. The color may help reproductive success and is used to attract mates, or to get recognized by the members of its own group. The color may constitute a warning to its natural enemies. Plants extensively use attractive colors to assist the process called pollination.

CRYPTIC COLORATION : This kind of coloration may conceal the animal from its predator or prey and it involves the use of colors that have general resemblance with its surroundings.

IMITATIVE COLORATION: Coloration is an adaptive mechanism and an animal can conceal its presence by imitating the appearance of  a natural object present in its environment.

WARNING COLORATION AND BATESIAN MIMICRY: Warning coloration consists of bold markings that warn predators away from inedible or poisonous animals. Mimicry is a deceptive coloration in which the animal resembles or mimic a warning-colored animal or predator.

Spiritualism-The Colors of Life: What is Color? Color may serve as a warning sign and it involves the use of bold markings. Mimicry involves deceptive coloration in which the animal deceptively uses the warning coloration of another animal.Monarch butterfly/The Viceroy butterfly: The North American Monarch is poisonous and is distasteful and is protected by its Warning Coloration which the Viceroy uses for its Mimicry.

SUDDEN CHANGES IN COLORATION: Chameleon is famous for its ability to change its color suddenly to express anger or fright. The change is caused by movement of pigment called chromatophores within the cells.

Spiritualism-The Colors of Life: What is Color? The purpose of color could be that of expressing sudden mood changes like that of anger, or excitement. Chameleon is known for such Sudden Change in Coloration.

COLORATION FOR REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS: The use of color may serve the purpose of getting recognition from other members of its own group and it may specifically attract the attention of mates during the reproductive season. Many plants use colors to aid pollination by bees and moths.

Spiritualism-The Colors of Life: What is Color? The purpose of color could be that of promoting reproductive success. A male, marine Stickleback, tiny Bony Fish( 3 to 10 cms long) in reproductive condition with complete armour plates develops special red coloration to attract its mate during breeding season.

Biological Coloration is genetically determined and the living organism does not voluntarily select the colors it may display. Human beings could be an exception as man uses colors for purposes other than those designed by Nature for human existence.

To explore the spiritual basis of biological coloration, in my next post, I would discuss as to how living things generate colors that play a vital role in biochemical reactions such as photosynthesis, maintenance of thermal balance and other physiological functions.

Whole Dude – Whole Equality: Jean Jacques Rousseau, Swiss-French philosopher, writer, and political theorist was one of the great figures of the French Enlightenment and he continues to inspire the Romantic generation.

Jean Jacques Rousseau(b. June 28, 1712 Geneva, Switzerland – d. July 2, 1778 France) was one of the great figures of the French Enlightenment and he had shaped 19th-century Romanticism. Enlightenment is the term for the rational, liberal, humanitarian, and scientific trend of 18th century Western thought. During 17th century, Empiricism of Francis Bacon, John Locke, and others fostered the belief in “Natural Law”, Natural or Universal Order, promoted a scientific approach to political and social issues. It gave rise to a sense of human progress, and State is viewed as its rational instrument. Other representatives of the Enlightenment are thinkers such as Voltaire, Montesquieu, Adam Smith, Swift, Hume, Kant, G.E. Lessing, Beccaria, and in the United States, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. Rousseau had inspired the French revolutionists and had influenced Kant, Goethe, Robespierre, and Tolstoy. The Romantics are associated with belief in a return to nature and in the innate goodness of man.

WHOLE MAN – WHOLE NATURAL – WHOLE EQUAL:

In response to a question set by the Academy of Dijon: “What is the origin of the inequality among men and is it justified by natural law?”, Rousseau(1754) proposed that natural man is good. He traced the successive stages by which man has descended from primitive innocence to corrupt sophistication. He exonerated nature and blamed society for the emergence of vices. He maintained that human beings are essentially ‘good’ and ‘equal’ in the ‘State of Nature’, but are corrupted by the introduction of property, agriculture, science, and commerce when people began to compete with one another. In his view, the history of man’s life on earth has been a history of decay. However, he did not advocate a return to the state of nature. He suggested minimizing social inequalities by explaining the concept of ‘Social Contract’(1762). He held that people entered into a “Social Contract” among themselves, establishing governments, and educational systems to correct the inequalities brought about by the rise of civilization. Thus, ‘Social Contract’ is the agreement by which human beings are said to have abandoned the ‘State of Nature’ in order to form society in which they now live. This belief in man’s natural goodness is the cornerstone of Rousseau’s argument. The problem is that of man’s alienation from nature and hence the loss of innocence. “Man was born free, but he is everywhere in chains.” Rousseau had profound impact on people’s way of life. In his novel Emile(1762), Rousseau expounds his theory that the true purpose of education is not imparting of knowledge but the drawing out of what is already in the child. Rousseau opened men’s eyes to the beauties of nature and made liberty an object of almost universal aspiration.

We have not yet overcome the problem of inequalities among men and man has not yet discovered true freedom. Freedom, and Equality cannot be discovered if man remains alienated from his true or real nature. To achieve Whole Equality, Whole Liberty, Whole Freedom, Whole Justice, Whole Peace, Whole Harmony, and Whole Tranquility, men need the concept called ‘Whole Dude’ to formulate a new Whole Contract to establish Whole Governance based upon Whole Democracy that includes Whole Transparency, and Whole Accountability.

THE DRAGON COVETS THE ARCTIC – CHINA LUSTS FOR GLOBAL SUPREMACY

COMMUNIST CHINA LUSTS FOR GLOBAL SUPREMACY:

The Red Dragon's Lust for Global Supremacy poses a great danger to Freedom and Democracy all over the world.

The Red Dragon’s Lust for Global Supremacy poses a great danger to Freedom and Democracy all over the world.

In the past, our main concern was about the dangers posed by Colonialism and Imperialism and little attention was given to the Communist Revolution in China and its potential to impact Freedom and Democracy all over the world. China’s founding father, Mao Tse-tung(1893-1976), the Chinese Communist leader; Chairman of the People’s Republic of China(1949-1959) and of its Communist Party(1949-1976) had clearly articulated a policy of territorial expansionism to become a global Superpower. Since that time, the Communist Dragon pursued the policy of annexation and military occupation and has constantly prepared itself to assert its military power and domination in Southeast Asia, and now the rest of the world. The huge continent of Africa is virtually colonized by China and China has gained access to natural resources all over the world including major countries in the West such as Canada. We need to wake up to this reality called China and respond to its greed for territory, and curb its lust for power.

I am pleased to share this essay titled “The Dragon Covets the Arctic” by Dr. A. Adityanjee, President, Council for Strategic Affairs, New Delhi, India. There is no escape from not knowing the military threat posed by Communist China and its policy of expansionism.

China’s lust for oil, minerals, rare earths, fish and desire for an alternative northern sea route boils the Arctic Geopolitics!

Introduction:

Iceland is a small, sparsely populated island nation with a population of only 320,000 and area of 40,000 square miles. It is the only member of the NATO that does not have an army of its own. Icelandic banks were part of the 2008 global financial crisis and meltdown when they exposed the Icelandic government of huge financial risks by indulging in risky loans and speculative foreign currency transactions without having enough liquidity and capital reserves. The fiscal crisis led to a former Icelandic prime minister losing his job and being hauled to court of law for not supervising the banks enough.

In an international capitalistic, mercantile system, if Iceland is a company, it would be a “sitting duck” for outright purchase and acquisition. Fortunately, foreigners are not allowed to buy any property or real estate in Iceland and need a special permit.

And here comes the Peoples’ Republic of China, rich with $ 3.4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves in its kitty. It has built a palatial embassy in Reykjavik, Iceland worth $250 million with only 7 accredited diplomats. China is negotiating a free trade area with Iceland, the first with any European nation. Former Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao even paid a state visit to Iceland for two full days in 2012. Other Chinese ministers and officials have also been very active in Iceland with bilateral visits and cultural events.

In 2010, Huang Nubo, a “poetry loving” Chinese billionaire and former communist party official visited Iceland to meet his former classmate Hjorleifur Sveinbjornsson, a Chinese translator with whom he had shared a room in 1970s in the Peking University. He expressed his intense love for poetry and put up $ one million to finance Iceland-China Cultural Fund and organized two poetry summits, the first one in Reykjavik in 2010 and the second one in Beijing in 2011.

Last year (2012), Huang Nubo and his Beijing based company, the Zhongkun group offered to buy 300 sq km of Icelandic land ostensibly to develop a holiday resort with a golf course. This Chinese billionaire wanted to pay $7 million to an Icelandic sheep farmer to take over the land and build a $100 million 100-room five-star resort hotel, luxury villas, an eco-golf course and an airstrip with 10 aircrafts. A state-owned Chinese bank reportedly offered the Zhongkun group a soft loan of $ 800 million for this project.

The deal was blocked by the Icelandic Interior Minister who asked many pertinent questions but reportedly got no answers. Huang would not take no for an answer and has submitted a revised bid for leasing the land for $ one million instead of outright purchase. He makes an unbelievable assertion that there is a market demand for peace and solitude: “Rich Chinese people are so fed up of pollution that they would like to enjoy the fresh air and solitude of the snowy Iceland”.

The current Icelandic government, a left-of-center coalition has given this proposal a cold shoulder. But, with elections due in April 2013 in Iceland, China is hoping for a more sympathetic government to approve the project. Iceland looks like an easy bird of prey for the wily red Dragon with insatiable appetite.

China is showing generosity to another poor and sparsely populated, self-governing island of Greenland by offering investments in mining industry with proposal to import Chinese crews for construction and mining operations. Greenland is rich in mineral deposits and rare earth metals. China wants Greenland to provide exclusive rights to its rare earth metals in lieu of the fiscal investments. Under one such proposal, China would invest $2.5 billion in an iron mine and would bring 5000 Chinese construction and mining workers whereas the population of the capital of Greenland, Nuuk is only 15000.

Arctic Council Membership:

There are eight members of the Arctic Council that includes Canada, Denmark (including Greenland), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the USA. All these eight countries have geographic territories within the Arctic Circle. It was constituted in 1996 as an intergovernmental body but has evolved gradually from a dialogue forum to a geo-political club and a decision-making body. There are continuing territorial disputes in Arctic Circle. Ownership of the Arctic is governed by the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, which gives the Arctic nations an exclusive economic zone that extends 200 nautical miles from the land. Member countries signed their first treaty on joint search and rescue missions in 2011. A second treaty on cleaning up oil spills is being negotiated. The group established its permanent secretariat at Tromso, Norway in January 2013.

Arctic Melting and Opening of Newer Sea Lanes:

With global warming becoming a reality, the Arctic ice has started to melt rapidly opening the northern sea-lanes that were frozen earlier. In summer of 2012, 46 ships sailed through the Arctic Waters carrying 1.2 million tonnes of cargo. There are legal questions about the international status of the northern sea lanes.

China’s Lust for Arctic Resources:

The Arctic has 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30% of gas according to the US Geological Survey. Greenland alone contains approximately one tenth of the world’s deposits of rare earth minerals. China which already has a monopoly on world’s rare earth metal trade wants to continue controlling this global trade. China piously claims that the Arctic resources are the heritage of the entire mankind while insisting that the South China sea is its exclusive sovereign territory.

In 2004, China set up its first and the only Arctic scientific research station, curiously named “Yellow River Station” on the Svalbard Island of Norway. China, so far, has sent 6 arctic expeditions. China plans to build more research bases. In 2012, the 170-meters long icebreaker “Snow Dragon” (MV Xue Long) became the first Chinese Arctic expedition to sail along the Northern Sea Route into the Barents Sea. Incidentally, as early as 1999, this 21000 metric ton research icebreaker Xue Long had docked in the Canadian North-Western territory unexpectedly. China is building another 120-meter long icebreaker with the help of Finland while the Polar Research institute in Shanghai trains scientists and other personnel for Arctic expeditions.

China’s Previous Use of Deception:

There is no mandarin character for word transparency. China has been known to use duplicity and deception since the Art of War was written by Sun Tzu. China’s rhetoric of “peaceful and harmonious rise” and hegemonic behavior are predictably diametrically opposite to each other. China’s use of deception to camouflage its intentions in geopolitical matters is not surprising. While China joined the NPT in 1991, it provided 50 kg of highly enriched uranium to Pakistan, provided that country with a nuclear weapon design and supervised Pakistan’s first nuclear test at the Chinese nuclear testing site of Lop Nur. China purchased in 1998 an unfinished aircraft carrier from Ukraine after the breakup of Soviet Union ostensibly for developing a floating casino. The same “floating casino” is now China’s first aircraft carrier projecting Chinese naval and maritime power in the South China Sea.

China’s Application in Arctic Council Membership:

China currently has an ad hoc observer status with Arctic Council. China’s application for permanent observer-ship was denied by Norway in 2012 owing to bilateral dispute over awarding of Nobel peace prize to China’s Liu Xiaobo in 2010. China still has a pending application to be decided in May 2013 Arctic Council summit in Sweden when Canada takes over the chair for the next two years. With a permanent observer status, China would get full access to all Arctic Council meetings. Permanent observers do not have voting rights in the council but can participate in deliberations.

China is trying to distinguish itself from the rest of the applicants as a “Near Arctic State” on the perfidiously clever but fallacious grounds that the northernmost part of China in the province of Manchuria (the Amur river) is only one thousand miles south to the Arctic circle. The fallacy is that Manchuria was a separate, independent country that was annexed by China after the Communist take-over. Manchus had ruled over China for centuries during the reign of Manchu dynasty and last Chinese Emperor Pu Yi was actually the last Manchu emperor. Chinese ownership and annexation of Manchuria (Manchu-Kuo) is still not settled. A disputed territory cannot be used by China to make a geopolitical claim for being a “Near Arctic State”.

Other Pending Applications:

Other countries or non-state actors with pending applications for permanent observer-ship status include Japan, South Korea, India, Singapore, European Union, and non-state actors like Greenpeace and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers. All these applications will be decided one way or the other in May 2013. The vote has to be unanimous for acceptance and how the US and Russia will vote is the crucial issue. In the past, Norway had vetoed China’s membership application. Some of the Arctic Council members may not approve European Union’s application because of EU’s penchant for restrictive and narrow rulings. Whereas Sweden, Canada, Iceland and Denmark may support China’s application, there are doubts about Norway, Russia and the US. Russia is currently the most vociferous member of Arctic Council that has serious reservations in expanding the Arctic club.

Strategic Issues:

China has voracious appetite for new territories and has been seeking new frontiers for the last three hundred years with Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, Xinjiang and Tibet. China’s list of “core issues” is ever-expanding, starting with Taiwan and Tibet. China has included the whole the South China Sea and its islands as a core issue. China is aggressively claiming sovereignty on these islands based on historical maps and manufactured mythological evidence. China has now a license from the UN for deep-seabed mining for minerals in the Indian Ocean and has developed naval bases in Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea ports. If China manages to get a toehold in Arctic Circle, its behavior will become as belligerent in Arctic as it is in the South China Sea. It might claim sovereignty over the whole of the Northern route sea lanes based on “historical evidence”. If in 22nd century, China decides that the Arctic Circle is its core national issue, one would be seeing Chinese aircraft carriers in the Arctic Sea and Chinese nuclear powered submarines in the Barents Sea along with military bases with “Chinese characteristics” in the Iceland and Greenland.

SPIRITUALISM AND FUNDAMENTAL DUALISM

SPIRITUALISM AND FUNDAMENTAL DUALISM:

Spiritualism and Fundamental Dualism: Madhvacharya(c. 1199 - c. 1278) is the exponent of "DVAITA", the Indian School of Philosophy that claims a basic difference in kind between God and individual souls.

Spiritualism and Fundamental Dualism: Madhvacharya(c. 1199 – c. 1278) is the exponent of “DVAITA”, the Indian School of Philosophy that claims a basic difference in kind between God and individual souls.

Madhva of India had glorified difference between things. He traced back his dualistic thought to the Hindu scriptures known as the ‘Upanishads’. His main works are his commentaries on the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Vedanta-Sutras, and the Indian epic poem of Mahabharata. Five types of distinctions, or differences are central to Madhva’s system of “DVAITA” philosophy: 1. distinction between soul and God, 2. distinction between soul, and soul, 3. distinction between soul, and matter, 4. distinction between God and matter, and 5. distinction between matter, and matter. Madhva refuted the “ADVAITA”, or Non-dualistic philosophy of Shankara(A.D. 788 – A.D. 820) who believed that the individual soul and the absolute Spirit(Brahman) are totally identical in all aspects and cannot be differentiated into two separate categories. Madhva rejected the Shankara theory of “MAYA” or ‘illusion’ which taught that only spirituality is eternal and the material world is illusory and deceptive. Madhva maintained that the simple fact that things are transient and ever-changing does not mean that they are not real. Madhva while rejecting the Advaita concepts of falsity and indescribability of world, did not oppose the distinction between the human body and the individual human soul. It appears that the various Schools of Indian philosophy to a large extent agree to a view that separates the individual human soul from its human body. However, it is interesting to note that Madhva thinks that the human individual is “Free” and is dependent only upon God. Madhva shared the Hindu belief in endless transmigration of souls through cycles of birth, death, and rebirth and stated that the “Release” is obtained by devotion to God. He promoted a view, ultimately it is God’s grace that saves man and that man must receive God’s grace through worship.

SPIRITUALISM – WHAT IS THE BASIS FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE?

SPIRITUALISM AND THE BASIS FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE: The structure and function of human ovum or the egg cell must be clearly understood to know the Spiritual Basis for Human Existence.

SPIRITUALISM AND THE BASIS FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE: The structure and function of human ovum or the egg cell must be clearly understood to know the Spiritual Basis for Human Existence. This egg cell is capable of immanent actions, displays cognitive abilities, and performs intelligent functions. It is conscious and is fundamentally distinct from non-living, inanimate, insentient, inorganic matter.

My view about human soul and spirit differs from the views shared by the three major Indian Schools of philosophy. In my opinion, the ground substance that is called ‘cytoplasm’ is a spiritual substance(the substance that I recognize as the substance associated with Soul/Spirit) and this corporeal substance or living matter is fundamentally distinct from non-living matter. The entire human organism is derived from the single, fertilized egg cell; therefore, the individual human soul cannot be separated from the human body it constitutes and develops to establish a human individual that lives or exists as a real, physical being that has objective identity apart from subjective living experience. To interpret the term ‘spirituality’, or ‘spiritualism’, I make a fundamental distinction between life, and non-life, between organic, and inorganic matter, between animate, and inanimate, between sentient, and insentient, between intelligent and mechanical functions, and between immanent actions, and transitive actions.

Mr. Zbigniew Brzezinski had served as the National Security Adviser in the administration of James Earl Carter, Jr., 39th President of the United States(1977-1981). He had published an essay in The New York Times on February 13, 2013 to share his views about the future of the US – China relations. I have reproduced the essay and my readers may notice that Mr. Brzezinski makes no mention about the 14th Dalai Lama, the Leader of Tibetan people and does not express any particular concern about the present situation inside Tibet. Hegemonism represents a policy or the practice of a nation in aggressively expanding its influence over other countries. Historically, the People’s Republic of China has displayed its hegemonistic doctrine by its military occupation of the autonomous State of Tibet after the Communist take over of power in China. To contain the military threat posed by China’s dominance over other countries of the region, the United States had pursued a policy of providing military assistance to Tibetans who are willing to resist the military occupation of their Land. India has also recognized the threat posed by China’s hegemonism and has joined the US efforts to resist the Chinese influence in Tibet. People’s Republic of China resorted to a massive, military retaliation and had attacked India across the Himalayan frontier during October/November 1962. The War of Aggression launched by Communist China resulted in the formulation of a military alliance/pact between the United States, India, and Tibet to defend their national security interests in the region. This alliance has created a military organization called Establishment Number. 22 during 1962 under the Kennedy administration and in 1966, this military organization was given the additional name of Special Frontier Force. Following President Kennedy’s initiative, all other succeeding US Presidents have continued their support to this military organization and the United States continued its participation in its military mission. However, during 1971-72, under Nixon’s presidency, the US took advantage of the political split between the Soviet Union and China and began a policy of normalizing the US – China relations. Dr. Henry Kissinger as the National Security Adviser and later as the US Secretary of State, had pursued a policy of keeping the 14th Dalai Lama at a distance while secretly participating in the military activities of Special Frontier Force. Dr. Kissinger had insisted that no US visa would be issued to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the temporal, and spiritual leader of the autonomous State of Tibet. Mr. Brzezinski as the National Security Adviser continued Dr. Kissinger’s policy of blocking the 14th Dalai Lama from visiting the United States while the US maintained the military alliance/pact with India and Tibet. Thanks to Cyrus Vance, the US Secretary of State, and President Jimmy Carter, the US had issued its first visa to the 14th Dalai Lama during 1979 and since that time His Holiness the Dalai Lama has visited the United States on numerous occasions. I would not think that the United States would ignore the problem of military oppression inside Tibet. The people of Tibet recognize that they have to struggle against a superior, military power if they have to regain their natural Freedom. When the oppressor is unjust, it would be futile to try reasoning to get justice from a tyrant like Communist China. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, it may be said: “I want world sympathy in this Battle of Right against Might.” Communist China’s military occupation of Tibet can be reversed if Tibetans can overwhelm their opponent with a demand for right and just course of action. I would like to draw a comparison to the Battle of David vs Goliath described in The Old Testament Book of 1 SAMUEL, Chapter 17 to state my hope that Tibetans will prevail in this Battle of Right against Might and evict the military occupier from their Land.

US-TIBET RELATIONS: It is very surprising to read the essay published by President Jimmy Carter's National Security Adviser on the US - China relations. He makes no mention of this apparent US - Tibet relations. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is seen with Richard Blum, his wife, US Senator Dianne Feinstein, and former President Jimmy Carter.

THE BATTLE OF RIGHT AGAINST MIGHT. Just like David who had defeated the Philistine Champion Goliath, Tibet will prevail in its just battle against the military giant called China.

The Old Testament Book of 1 SAMUEL, Chapter 17 gives a vivid account of this armed confrontation between Israel and the Philistine army. While Philistines encroached into Israel’s territory in Judah, they had taken a firm position at a place called Socoh. The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the Valley of Elah between them. Goliath was a gigantic warrior of the Philistine army. He was over eleven feet in height and for forty days he continued to openly challenge the Israeli camp to come forward and engage him in a personal combat to decide the result of the battle. David, a very young man with no military experience, who had come there to deliver some provisions to his brothers, had heard this challenge mockingly posed by Goliath. David went to face Goliath, armed with only a sling, and five smooth stones. David without any sense of fear shot a stone towards Goliath hitting him on the forehead. Goliath fell and David pulled the sword carried by Goliath to cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their Champion was dead, they fled away conceding their defeat. David’s triumph over Goliath shows that the outcome of a fight is not controlled by the opposing sides’ military strength.

“Giants, but Not Hegemons”

By ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI,

His most recent book is “Strategic Vision: America and the Crisis of Global Power.”
Published: February 13, 2013, NY times

WASHINGTON — Today, many fear that the emerging American-Chinese duopoly must inevitably lead to conflict.
But I do not believe that wars for global domination are a serious prospect in what is now the Post-Hegemonic Age.

Admittedly, the historical record is dismal. Since the onset of global politics 200 years ago, four long wars (including the Cold War) were fought over the domination of Europe, each of which could have resulted in global hegemony by a sole superpower.

Yet several developments over recent years have changed the equation. Nuclear weapons make hegemonic wars too destructive, and thus victory meaningless. One-sided national economic triumphs cannot be achieved in the increasingly interwoven global economy without precipitating calamitous consequences for everyone. Further, the populations of the world have awakened politically and are not so easily subdued, even by the most powerful. Last but not least, neither the United States nor China is driven by hostile ideologies.

Moreover, despite our very different political systems, both our societies are, in different ways, open. That, too, offsets pressure from within each respective society toward animus and hostility. More than 100,000 Chinese are students at American universities, and thousands of young Americans study and work in China or participate in special study or travel programs. Unlike in the former Soviet Union, millions of Chinese regularly travel abroad. And millions of young Chinese are in daily touch with the world through the Internet.

All this contrasts greatly with the societal self-isolation of the 19th- and 20th-century contestants for global power, which intensified grievances, escalated hostility and made it easier to demonize the one another.

Nonetheless, we cannot entirely ignore the fact that the hopeful expectation in recent years of an amicable American-Chinese relationship has lately been tested by ever more antagonistic polemics, especially in the media of both sides. This has been fueled in part by speculation about America’s allegedly inevitable decline and about China’s relentless, rapid rise.

Pessimism about America’ future tends to underestimate its capacity for self-renewal. Exuberant optimists about China’s inevitable pre-eminence underestimate the gap that still separates China from America — whether in G.D.P. per capita terms or in respective technological capabilities.

Paradoxically, China’s truly admirable economic success is now intensifying the systemic need for complex social and political adjustments in how and to what extent a ruling bureaucracy that defines itself as communist can continue to direct a system of state capitalism with a rising middle class seeking more rights.

Simplistic agitation regarding the potential Chinese military threat to America ignores the benefits that the U.S. also derives from its very favorable geostrategic location on the open shores of two great oceans as well as from its trans-oceanic allies on all sides.

In contrast, China is geographically encircled by not always friendly states and has very few, if any, allies. On occasion, some of China’s neighbors are tempted by this circumstance to draw the U.S. into support of their specific claims or conflicts of interest against China. Fortunately, there are signs that a consensus is emerging that such threats should not be resolved unilaterally or militarily, but through negotiation.

Matters have been not helped by the American media’s characterization of the Obama administration’s relative rebalancing of focus toward Asia as a “pivot” (a word never used by the president) with military connotations. In fact, the new effort was only meant to be a constructive reaffirmation of the unchanged reality that the U.S. is both a Pacific and Atlantic power.

Taking all this into account, the real threat to a stable U.S.-China relationship does not arise from any hostile intentions on the part of either country, but from the disturbing possibility that a revitalized Asia may slide into the kind of nationalistic fervor that precipitated conflicts in 20th-century Europe over resources, territory or power.

There are plenty of potential flash points: North Korea vs. South Korea, China vs. Japan, China vs. India, or India vs. Pakistan. The danger is that if governments incite or allow nationalistic fervor as a kind of safety valve it can spin out of control.

In such a potentially explosive context, U.S. political and economic involvement in Asia can be a crucially needed stabilizing factor. Indeed, America’s current role in Asia should be analogous to Britain’s role in 19th-century Europe as an “off-shore” balancing influence with no entanglements in the region’s rivalries and no attempt to attain domination over the region.

To be effective, constructive and strategically sensitive U.S. engagement in Asia must not be based solely on existing alliances with Japan and South Korea. Engagement must also mean institutionalizing U.S.- Chinese cooperation.

Accordingly, America and China should deliberately not let their economic competition turn into political hostility. Mutual engagement bilaterally and multilaterally — and not reciprocal exclusion — is what is needed. For example, the U.S. ought not seek a “trans-Pacific partnership” without China, and China should not seek a Regional Comprehensive Economic Pact without the U.S.

History can avoid repeating the calamitous conflicts of the 20th century if America is present in Asia as stabilizer — not a would-be policeman — and if China becomes the preeminent, but not domineering, power in the region.

In January 2011, President Obama and now-departing Chinese President Hu Jintao met and issued a communique boldly detailing joint undertakings and proposing to build a historically unprecedented partnership between America and China. With Obama reelected and Xi Jinping preparing to take over China’s presidency in March, the two leaders should meet to revalidate and re-energize the U.S.-China relationship. Whether this relationship is vital and robust, or weak and full of suspicion, will affect the whole world.

SPIRITUALISM – THE FUNCTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS

SPIRITUALISM – THE FUNCTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS:

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: The understanding of Consciousness demands the recognition of difference between mechanical performance(Transitive Action), and intelligent performance(Immanent Action).

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: The understanding of Consciousness demands the recognition of difference between mechanical performance(Transitive Action), and intelligent performance(Immanent Action). Consciousness cannot be explained by elementary Laws of Physics and Chemistry. Living Functions are primarily Oxidation-Reduction Chemical Reactions.

Spiritualism and Consciousness: The actions performed in Nature have to be observed to know if it involves the selection of a purpose and the use of means to attain the desired goal. There is a difference between the forest fire and the bonfire.

Spiritualism and Consciousness: The actions performed in Nature have to be observed to know if it involves the selection of a purpose and the use of means to attain the desired goal. There is a difference between the forest fire and the bonfire. Consciousness cannot be explained using the mechanistic principles.

To make the fundamental distinction between the animate or living, and inanimate or non-living things, we may have to describe the nature of functions that can be observed in the actions performed by things. There is a difference between mechanical performance and intelligent performance. In the actions performed by the living things, the agent is perfected by its own actions, and activities. Actions such as growing, sensing, and understanding are called “Immanent” actions because they are activities which affect the growing, sensing, or understanding agent called the living thing. The action of one inert body upon another inert body is called “Transitive” action. For example, heating is a transitive action. In heating, the hot thing loses its own heat while heat is transferred to the cold thing. In the “Mechanistic” view, the continuity of nature is described in terms of the universality of purely mechanical principles. The mechanistic concept asserts that the phenomena of life are merely processes and transformations obeying elementary chemical and physical laws. However, it should not be very difficult to make a distinction between a forest fire and a bonfire, or a fire ignited in the kitchen in the preparation of a meal. Both the actions represent a chemical reaction called combustion, or rapid oxidation. Both actions may generate light, heat, and warmth. But, the forest fire may lack the purposiveness of the bonfire, or the kitchen fire used in cooking. The understanding of the living and the non-living things involves the difference between vital operations and mechanical operations. There is a difference between the vital power of the living thing and the mechanical capacity of inert, non-living thing.

THE VITAL POWER OF LIVING THINGS:

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: Amoeba proteus is a living organism as it has the ability to perform vital, living functions.

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: Amoeba proteus is a living organism as it has the ability to perform vital, living functions. Amoeba knows the fact of its own existence, it knows as to where it exists, and knows as to how it is existing. It displays two kinds of awareness; 1. What goes on around in its external environment, and 2. What goes on within its internal environment.

The word “Animal” derives from the Latin( anima, animus ) name for vital principle called “Soul” which is a life principle associated with functions like breathing, or the principle called animation. Breathing is a vital function as it is associated with the “Power” of self-nutrition. The power of self-nutrition is the originating power, the possession of which leads us to speak of things as living, and non-living. Nutrition is a vital power as the action is not a mechanical performance. Nutrition is a function associated with a purpose and it is guided to achieve a future end and it involves the choice or selection of specific means to attain the desired goal of its action. A non-living thing like a stone gets heated on exposure to Sun’s radiation and the action is not goal-oriented; it is not guided action to attain a specific purpose of that non-living agent. A living thing like a plant can convert thermal energy from Sun to a new form of chemical energy that it can further use to perform a variety of its own living functions like growth, and reproduction. Living functions are intelligent functions that involve the use of knowledge or information to perform goal-oriented, sequential actions.

SOUL AND THE CELLULAR FUNCTION OF CONSCIOUSNESS:

Brain Stem Reticular Formation shown as a red band in the image represents an integrative focus of consciousness functioning through its widespread interconnections with the Cerebral Cortex and other regions of the Brain. It functions to compose the contents of consciousness that would be revealed as Cortical Awareness. Reticular Formation describes "The Capacity of Consciousness" and without this function the contents of consciousness( or cortical awareness) will not be known to the individual.

SRI AUROBINDO GHOSH IN HIS BOOK, "LETTERS ON YOGA", Page 576 DESCRIBED CONSCIOUSNESS: "Just like you: you have lots of cells in your body; each cell has its own consciousness and you have a consciousness which is the consciousness of your total individuality, though made up of all these small cellular consciousness."

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: A LIVING, ANIMAL CELL PERFORMS VITAL FUNCTIONS USING ITS COGNITIVE ABILITIES.

SPIRITUALISM AND CONSCIOUSNESS: A LIVING, ANIMAL CELL PERFORMS VITAL FUNCTIONS USING ITS COGNITIVE ABILITIES. WHAT IS THAT “SOMETHING” THAT IS RECOGNIZED BY CONSCIOUSNESS?

Consciousness describes the ability to perform intelligent action. Consciousness describes the difference between vital operations and mechanical operations. Consciousness describes the difference between vital powers and the capacities of inert matter. Consciousness describes the difference between living things and non-living things. Consciousness is a biological, vital, or living(“Immanent”) function that characterizes the actions, and activities of living things. Consciousness can include psychological, and mental functions; but it is not a function that can only be performed by living matter of an anatomical structure, or organ called brain. In literature, religion, and philosophy, the term Consciousness is often used meaning, “attention to the contents or workings of one’s own mind.”  John Locke defined consciousness as a psychological condition; it is described as the perception of what passes in a man’s own mind. In popular belief, consciousness is viewed as a form of relationship or act of the mind toward objects in nature. Consciousness is claimed to be a continuous field or stream of mental “sense-data.” Very often, neuroscientists describe consciousness as a neurophysiological mechanism that depends on the functions of the brain. It is true for the Brain Stem Reticular Formation represents an integrative focus of consciousness functioning through its widespread interconnections with the cerebral cortex and other regions of the brain.Consciousness involves recognizing the existence, the fact of knowing something; it describes the fact of being aware of some information. What is that ‘something’ that is known or recognized by Consciousness?  A living thing which has a substance called living matter is conscious, or aware of the fact of its own existence in its given environment. There are two aspects of Consciousness that are subjectively registered by the living thing; 1. Consciousness is a state of knowing or awareness of what goes on around the individual living thing in its external environment, and 2. Consciousness is a state of knowing or awareness of what goes on within the individual living thing, its own internal environment. Consciousness is not simple awareness. It is awareness that involves the ability called “Cognition” which involves knowing; the processing of information, the analysis of information, the storing of information, the retrieval of information, and the application of information to perform a selected action. In other words, Consciousness represents the presence of “Intelligence.” A living thing has Consciousness of its nature of existence that demands the supply of energy from its external environment. The living thing uses its cognitive ability, to recognize the substances, the presence of both living, and non-living matter present in its external environment. It uses the power of self-nutrition to attract these substances to acquire energy, manipulate energy, transform energy, and exploit energy to perform its vital, living functions. Thus, Consciousness becomes an absolute attribute of life; it is the fundamental, biological characteristic of living matter or living substance. For the reasons that I have stated, I define Consciousness as a function by which a living thing knows the fact of its own existence; it knows as to where it exists and knows as to how it is existing.  Since Consciousness is a function that operates at a level of structural, and functional organization that is the characteristic of complex, organic molecules, this function cannot be observed, or measured by quantum physicists who study structures and functions of subatomic particles. I define Consciousness as the ability to establish a connection, or a relationship between energy-demanding molecules, and energy-yielding molecules. A Fundamental Force like the force of Gravitation is very important for existence of man on planet Earth. Man recognizes the physical reality of his own existence with the help of gravitation which provides the experience of his body mass or body weight. At the same time, it must be noted that man exists on the surface of a very fast spinning celestial object. The perception of this basic reality of Earth’s speed and velocity by the human organs of sense perception would endanger the ability to live. Man’s physical existence is defended, and is protected by the shielding effect of the force of gravitation. Gravitation helps to block the sensory awareness of the speed of Earth’s motions. This function of gravitational force must be distinguished from the intelligent function called Consciousness.

SPIRITUALISM-CONSCIOUSNESS-THE MOTIONS OF CELESTIAL BODIES: Human Existence demands alternating periods of light and darkness called Day and Night. At the same time, man cannot exist with direct, sensory perception of the very fast revolving, and spinning motions of planet Earth

ADI SHANKARA’S UNQUALIFIED NON-DUALISM – THE THEORY OF PURE CONSCIOUSNESS:

ADI SHANKARACHARYA – THE PROPONENT OF UNQUALIFIED NON-DUALISM: He based his view on his Theory of “PURE CONSCIOUSNESS.”

The Indian School of Philosophy known as “SUDDHADVAITA”, or Unqualified Non-Dualism of Adi Shankara is based upon a system of thought that may be called “ATMADVAITA” that describes one, universal, eternal, and self-illuminating self whose essence is “Pure Consciousness” without a Subject(“ASRAYA”) and without an Object(“VISAYA”) and from a transcendental point of view, “Pure Consciousness” is the only Ultimate Reality. The phenomenal world and finite individuals could be empirically true, but from the higher point of view are merely false appearances. Adi Shankara based his view on his definition of “Reality: The “Real” is that whose negation is not possible. The only thing that satisfies this criterion is consciousness; because denial of consciousness presupposes the consciousness that denies. It is conceivable that any object is not existent, but the absence of consciousness is not conceivable. Adi Shankara used his immense logical skills and relied upon reasoning to claim that consciousness is the only reality and anything different from it would be unreal. The basic problem of Adi Shankara’s philosophy is that of explaining as to how such “Pure Consciousness” appears in ordinary experience to become individualized as “my consciousness.”

Mystery of Consciousness : Life versus Non-life

Gaurachandra Das, B. Tech, M.Tech, Electrical Engineering-IIT Kharagpur

General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanical Theory (QM) are the two most prominent
theories in the field of Physics. General Theory of Relativity given by Einstein in 1915 states that
direction of light propagation should be changed in a gravitational field. It predicts that “light coming
from a strong gravitational field should have its wavelength shifted to larger values (a red-shift). The
electromagnetic field can have waves in it that carry energy that we call light. Likewise, the gravitational
field can have waves that carry energy and are called gravitational waves. These may be thought of as
ripples in the curvature of space-time that travel at the speed of light.”1 On the other hand Quantum
Mechanical Theory predicts the behavior of particles as waves as they drift away from the classical
domain. Both these stalwart theories till date have been unable to predict the function of consciousness
in living bodies. In fact, they do not even stand unwavering scrutiny and are subject to reformations, time and
again. Albert Einstein himself stated in this regard in 1954-“I consider it quite possible that physics
cannot be based on the field concept, i.e., on continuous structures. In that case, nothing remains of my
entire castle in the air, gravitation theory included, and of the rest of modern physics.”

In the words of Roger Penrose – “I definitely believe that Quantum Mechanics is not a final theory and it is incomplete. I agree with Einstein in that sense.” Quantum Mechanics has proved insufficient to describe
the nature of reality so far. He further says-“Quantum Mechanics has two parts: the first is Schrodinger’s
equation, which tells how a system evolves, it is a very precise equation yet it does not tell you how the world
behaves. The second part of QM is the measurement process. The measurement process is inconsistent
with Schroedinger equation. It is non-deterministic, probabilistic, etc. Although these two parts are
inconsistent with each other, they do fit together in a rather remarkable way. To me, it suggests that
QM is not perfectly correct.” 2 Another is the famous Schrodinger’s cat example. (Experiment parallel
to it is being done in Santa Barbara, California under Dirk Baumeister.) Penrose remarks -
“ Schroedinger pointed out that his own equation tells that you could produce a cat that is both alive and
dead at the same time. It is ridiculous because in reality you don’t see cats that are both alive and dead
at the same time. This means there is something wrong with the equations at the level when the objects
become big enough”.2

Schrodinger’s cat set-up

Along with Hameroff, Penrose constructed a theory of human consciousness in which human
consciousness is pointed to as being the result of a quantum gravity effect in microtubules. That was
presented in his “Orchestrated Reduction of Quantum Coherence in Brain Microtubules: A Model for
Consciousness”. However, he also says “Our present scientific knowledge cannot describe
consciousness. On the other hand, boundaries of what we call scientific are not fixed on this view.
Perhaps we may never be able to understand the Ultimate Reality through a rigorous scientific
approach. Some fundamentally new insights are needed. If perhaps there will eventually emerge some
kind of ultimate theory that may explain part of the reality, that theory must differ enormously from
what we have seen in physical theories so far” 2. So as per his opinion, a fundamentally new theory with
remarkably different features is needed to explain the paradigm of consciousness. Thus, what is this
consciousness, a mystery to the world of physics so far.

Robots are another field in which distinction between life and non-life can be seen approaching a
border-line. Nowadays robots are quoted to be even writing poems. But such collection of words is an
artificial attempt from the word-bank fed to computers and arranged with algorithms. The machine has
no feelings and emotions and the purpose of poetry –“to satisfy the poet’s heart” remains forever
absent to a machine. The computer may also play chess but that is the computational (mechanistic)
part done by it from the strategies fed by the programmer. A machine may also pass the Turing’s test3
but the Chinese room argument by John Searle refutes the conscious sense coming from this
resemblance. Actually to prove computers intelligent, one needs to design a robot that can play any
surprise or unexpected game brought before it, not just the chess game. It should be able to learn any
game by speech or text inputs and then play that game reasonably well. But it is not possible to design
such a robot because playing a surprise game requires an understanding in both learning and devising
strategy. A robot can do computation, but it will never have understanding because it can’t be
conscious.

A Robot cannot play an unprogrammed game.

After the tragic event of 9/11 many scientists have shown remarkable interest in these ideas concerning
search of an Ultimate Theory, absolute Reality and depths of the conscious paradigm. They look for a
scientific clue from the known sources of scientific knowledge. This brings them closer to the ideas of
fine-tuning and intelligent design in the universe which have a valid and very reasonable role in the
creation. The fine-tuning of water molecule (H2O) and preciseness of universal constants verify this
claim.

There are various directions to proceed on the basis of the Anthropic Principle.5 One of the interesting
insights is that Vedantic literature points in this direction about the presence of different universes
which have life and are also spiritual in nature. This idea is feasible from the strong Anthropic principle
as Roger Penrose says – “This is the argument that only the physical constants of nature which have
specific values may be suitable for life. Only in the world where the numbers are suitable for
consciousness we will find beings present in that world. It may be a completely different kind of life,
which is not like us at all, which does not depend on chemistry the way we do. So that may open up the
possibility of a world or spiritual world.” 2

Looking into Einstein’s life, we all admire his great insights for a scientific worldview having
mathematical foundations. At same time he also had some profound feeling for religion. In other words,
he tried to relate both scientific and religious worldviews in his life. He said-“Science without religion is
lame and religion without science is blind.” Another of his famous quotes is –“God doesn’t cast dice.”
This may be a serious question posed to the propaganda that life is a chance phenomenon. Roger
Penrose remarks in this connection – “There are remarkable interrelations between truth and beauty.
Even there is a mystery of our perceptions of mathematical truths. I would say that these are higher and
deeper aspects of reality of which we have little conception at the present time.”2 Einstein didn’t see
any conflict between science and religion while he considered them complementary. He could live
happily by synthesizing both the worldviews. It is from this religious paradigm, especially Vedantic
paradigm where we get a precisely correct understanding of consciousness which is a mystery for the
modern thinkers.

Universe and life is not created by humans so the proposal to study and demarcate its
ingredients and intricacies by research-based approach may not be well-placed and successful. It may
actually be like an ant’s attempt to study the architecture of Mercedes-Benz, which is quite too much for
the ant!
However the religious side in this direction, particularly the Vedantic conception offers

interesting comprehensive facts and insights…for example, Bhagavad Gita says that “the soul (atma) or
spiriton is the cause of consciousness. This spiriton or atma interacts with matter through the agency of
the Paramatma or the all-pervading conscious aspect of the absolute truth. This interaction depends on
higher order, non-mathematical laws relating to psychological principles such as desire and free-will.”6
Bhagavad Gita mentions that “the size of spiriton or atma is 1/10000 of the tip of a hair; it is
inconceivable or spiritual in nature and it is eternal and unborn.”7 In fact, our present science cannot
explain this. As some prominent scientists (as Max Born, Roger Penrose and William D. Phillips) say -
“We need a new science, a higher dimensional science to explain this subtle conception of the source of
life.” Yet, its presence in the form of consciousness can be experienced by us all. Max Born says – “I saw
in the atom the key to the deepest secret of nature and it revealed to me the greatness of creation and
the Creator.”8

Roger Penrose and Dr T.D. Singh

So, probably, the sincere mind of a great scientist would need to blur these boundaries between
science and religion and sincerely take up this quest to understand life and conscious paradigm. This has
been the attitude of a galaxy of prominent thinkers, scientists and vastly learned men such as Nicholas
Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, James Clerk Maxwell, Albert Einstein, Max
Born, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Werner Heisenberg, Charles Townes, William D. Phillips and hundreds more.
Albert Einstein says-“I sense these things deeply…the most beautiful and profound religious emotion
that we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. And this mysticality is the power of all true
science. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power which is
revealed in the comprehensible universe forms my idea of God.” In the words of Charles Townes-“I
believe there is no long-range question more important than the purpose and meaning of our lives and
of the universe.” 8 Indeed, such a positive and synthesized approach offers a key to solve this mystery of
life and consciousness, to know the distinction between life and non-life and to delve deeper into
Absolute Reality.

SPIRITUALISM – THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM

Spiritualism – The New Advaita Theory of Non-Dualism responds to the view stated in the Science of Self-Realization by Srila Prabhupada- the Founder-Acharya of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness.(Photo credit: Wikipedia)

SPIRITUALISM – THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM:

SPIRITUALISM - THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM: THE LORD'S SONG-THE BHAGAVAD GITA, CHAPTER VII, PARAMAHAMSA VIJNANA YOGA(KNOWLEDGE OF THE ULTIMATE TRUTH), VERSE # 9: "I AM THE LIFE( THE "JEEVANAM") OF ALL THAT LIVES." It is the LORD GOD who lives and hence there is no separation of Body, Mind, Soul, Spirit, and God who is Living.

SPIRITUALISM – THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM: THE LORD’S SONG-THE BHAGAVAD GITA, CHAPTER VII, PARAMAHAMSA VIJNANA YOGA(KNOWLEDGE OF THE ULTIMATE TRUTH), VERSE # 9: “I AM THE LIFE( THE “JEEVANAM”) OF ALL THAT LIVES.” It is the LORD GOD who lives and hence there is no separation of Body, Mind, Soul, Spirit, and God who is Living.

I am sharing my view in response to a view shared by Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness in his book, Science of Self-Realization. Firstly, I must state that Srila Prabhupada has not taken into consideration “The Totality of Things.” To describe “The Totality of Things”, the ‘Three Fundamental Distinctions’, or the Three Fundamental Dualisms must be recognized. The Three Fundamental Distinctions are, 1. the distinction between the natural and the supernatural, 2. the distinction between the material and the spiritual, and 3. the distinction between the living and the non-living(animate/inanimate). Substance, material, or matter is a fundamental requirement to establish man’s existence in the physical world. But, this existence becomes a reality if, and only if there is separation of living, and non-living matter or material. A living thing exists by separating itself from its external environment. This separation is supported by implantation of “KNOWLEDGE” in the substance of the matter that gets transformed into living matter. The evidence of the “KNOWLEDGE” that is implanted is detected in two fundamental characteristics of living things; 1. the ‘Consciousness’ or ‘Awareness’ of the fact/state/condition of its own energy-dependent existence by which the living thing knows that it needs energy-yielding molecules found in the matter present in its external environment, and 2. ‘Intelligence’ that involves the cognitive ability to acquire information, process information, store information, and use information to recognize the presence of other ‘Things’ present in the external environment and use them to gain energy and to make structures and perform functions to maintain its own living condition. Consciousness, and Intelligence are the two basic ‘spiritual’ functions of all living things. These are not physical, or chemical functions that are entirely determined by the Laws of Physical Sciences. These are not functions that are dependent upon man’s physical, or mental work. If soul or spirit is defined as the vital, animating principle common to all living things, its presence can be known if the matter is conscious and is intelligent. The separation of man into material body, thinking substance or matter called mind, and an immaterial part or principle called spirit or soul is not correct. The biological existence of man demands Unity. There is no Mind-Body dichotomy as the complete human organism is derived from a single fertilized Egg Cell. The human person will not come into existence if there is no functional, and structural unity between mind, body, and the various tissues, organs, and organ systems. The entity named spirit or soul does not belong to the transcendental, or metaphysical realm or domain. Spirit and Soul belong to the corporeal substance or matter. Man is not an embodied soul and in reality man is a living soul. The purpose of Self-Discovery is not that of God-Discovery. The concern is not about the existence of God, or the verification of God’s existence. Man has to discover his own true or real nature. For this, man has to understand as to what it is to be a substance and as to what it is to be in a condition, or state called existence.

Spiritualism, the new ‘ADVAITA’ Theory of Non-Dualism seeks the Unity of man in body, mind, spirit, and soul. Such unity establishes the dependent condition called existence while man desires freedom in his thoughts, actions, and behavior.

SPIRITUALISM - THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM: THE LORD'S SONG - THE BHAGAVAD GITA, CHAPTER X - VIBHUTI -VISTARA YOGA - THE INFINITE GLORIES OF THE ULTIMATE TRUTH, VERSE# 22, LORD KRISHNA STATES, "BHUTANAM ASMI CHETANA" - " AND IN LIVING BEINGS, I AM CONSCIOUSNESS." IF THE LORD IS THE SOURCE OF THE FUNCTION, THE FUNCTION IS A SPIRITUAL FUNCTION.

SPIRITUALISM – THE NEW ADVAITA THEORY OF NON-DUALISM: THE LORD’S SONG – THE BHAGAVAD GITA, CHAPTER X – VIBHUTI -VISTARA YOGA – THE INFINITE GLORIES OF THE ULTIMATE TRUTH, VERSE# 22, LORD KRISHNA STATES, “BHUTANAM ASMI CHETANA” – ” AND IN LIVING BEINGS, I AM CONSCIOUSNESS.” IF THE LORD IS THE SOURCE OF THE FUNCTION, THE FUNCTION IS A SPIRITUAL FUNCTION.

The following is an article based upon the view shared by Srila Prabhupada in his book, The Science of Self-Realization.

Discovering the Self:

Who are you? Are you your body? Or your mind? Or are you something higher? Do you know who you are, or do you merely think you know? And does it really matter? Our materialistic society, with its unenlightened leadership, has made it virtually taboo to inquire into our real, higher self. Instead we use our valuable time maintaining, decorating, and pampering the body for its own sake. Might there be an alternative?

This very important Krishna consciousness movement is meant to save human society from spiritual death. At present human society is being misled by leaders who are blind, for they do not know the aim and objective of human life, which is self-realization and the reestablishment of our lost relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the missing point. The Krishna consciousness movement is trying to enlighten human society in this important matter.

According to Vedic civilization, the perfection of life is to realize one’s relationship with Krishna, or God. In the Bhagavad-Gita, which is accepted by all authorities in transcendental science as the basis of all Vedic knowledge, we understand that not only human beings but all living entities are parts and parcels of God. The parts are meant for serving the whole, just as the legs, hands, fingers, and ears are meant for serving the total body. We living entities, being parts and parcels of God, are duty-bound to serve Him.

Actually our position is that we are always rendering service to someone, either to our family, country, or society. If we have no one to serve, sometimes we keep a pet cat or dog and render service to it. All these factors prove that we are constitutionally meant to render service, yet in spite of serving to the best of our ability, we are not satisfied. Nor is the person to whom we are rendering that service satisfied. On the material platform, everyone is frustrated. The reason for this is that the service being rendered is not properly directed. For example, if we want to render service to a tree, we must water the root. If we pour water on the leaves, branches, and twigs, there is little benefit. If the Supreme Personality of Godhead is served, all other parts and parcels will be automatically satisfied. Consequently all welfare activities as well as service to society, family, and nation are realized by serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

It is the duty of every human being to understand his constitutional position with God and to act accordingly. If this is possible, then our lives become successful. Sometimes, however, we feel challenging and say, “There is no God,” or “I am God,” or even, “I don’t care for God.” But in actuality this challenging spirit will not save us. God is there, and we can see Him at every moment. If we refuse to see God in our life, then He will be present before us as cruel death. If we do not choose to see Him in one feature, we will see Him in another. There are different features of the Supreme Personality of Godhead because He is the original root of the entire cosmic manifestation. In one sense, it is not possible for us to escape Him.

This Krishna consciousness movement is not blind religious fanaticism, nor is it a revolt by some recent upstart; rather, it is an authorized, scientific approach to the matter of our eternal necessity in relation with the Absolute Personality of Godhead, the Supreme Enjoyer. Krishna consciousness simply deals with our eternal relationship with Him and the process of discharging our relative duties to Him. Thus, Krishna consciousness enables us to achieve the highest perfection of life attainable in the present human form of existence.

SPIRITUALISM – A COPERNICAN REVOLUTION

SPIRITUALISM – A COPERNICAN REVOLUTION:

Makar Sankranti is a festival celebrated in India in recognition of Sun's celestial journey which traverses the zodiacal sign called Capricorn during the month of January.

I am happy to extend my greetings to all of my readers on this festive occasion called ‘SANKRANTI’. In Indian tradition, Sun is represented as personification of the Divine Energy that sustains the life of all that lives on planet Earth. Apart from being the source of primary Energy, Sun is viewed as the Source of Knowledge and Indians seek Lord Surya, the Sun God’s blessings to illuminate their inner, mental world to banish darkness called ignorance. This would lead me to reflect about the theory of knowledge and the revolutionary change caused by Immanuel Kant in understanding our philosophic problems and procedures. In the context of our celebration of the Indian festival of ‘SANKRANTI’, I would like to pay a special tribute to Nicholas Copernicus(1457-1543) who laid the foundation for modern astronomy with his heliocentric theory of planetary motion which replaced the geocentric cosmological theory established by Ptolemy(Claudius Ptolemaeus) of 2nd century A.D. Ptolemy’s theory placed Earth motionless at the center of the universe with all celestial bodies revolving around it. Copernican system places the Sun motionless at the center of the solar system with all the planets, including Earth, revolving around it.

THE THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE – A COPERNICAN REVOLUTION:

Nicholas Copernicus, Polish astronomer caused a revolutionary change in Astronomy for he had reversed the way scientists think about the relationship of the Earth and the Sun.

Nicholas Copernicus, Polish astronomer caused a revolutionary change in Astronomy for he had reversed the way scientists think about the relationship of the Earth and the Sun.

Copernicus caused a revolution when he discerned reflections of the Earth’s own motion in the apparent motions of the planets, and stars. To the same extent, German philosopher Immanuel Kant(1724-1804) had inaugurated a new era in the development of philosophical thought. He did comprehensive, and systematic work in Theory of Knowledge, Ethics, and Aesthetics.

Immanuel Kant had reversed the way philosophers think about the relationship of the world of experience and the mind. As per Kant, the mind is not shaped by the world of experience; rather, the world of experience is shaped by the patterns set by the mind.

Immanuel Kant had reversed the way philosophers think about the relationship of the world of experience and the mind. As per Kant, the mind is not shaped by the world of experience; rather, the world of experience is shaped by the patterns set by the mind.

Kant had altered the nature of philosophic inquiry. He had recognized the limits of the philosophical traditions of both Empiricism that stresses Experience, and Rationalism that stresses Reason. He had analyzed the tradition of Rene Descartes(Rationalism) and had clarified the tradition of Francis Bacon(Empiricism). Kant attempted to incorporate both Experience and Reason, without falling into the Skepticism of the empirical school and without embracing the unverifiable metaphysical structure of the rationalist school. He had criticized Leibniz rationalism in his book, “Critique of Pure Reason”(1781). In Kant’s view, objective reality is known only insofar as it conforms to the essential structure of the knowing mind. Only objects of experience or phenomena may be known. Things lying beyond experience or noumena are unknowable. Kant stated that the human mind provides the forms and the categories that can be used to describe experience. He held the view that the problems like the existence of God, freedom, and immortality are insoluble by scientific thought. Kant had proudly asserted that he had accomplished a Copernican Revolution in philosophy. He claimed that the subject doing the knowing constitutes, to a considerable extent, the object of knowing; i.e., that knowledge is in part constituted by the mind itself which imposes its influence upon the data of experience. Hence, knowledge is the product of the knowing subject and not a simple description of an external reality. Kant had accounted for the application of the mind’s principles to objects by showing that the objects conform to the mind; in knowing, it is not mind that confirms to things but things confirm to the mind. I have to examine this issue for its relevance to the fundamental concern about human existence.

SPIRITUALISM – A COPERNICAN REVOLUTION:

SUN - SPIRITUALISM - COPERNICAN REVOLUTION: In a moving world and universe called "JAGAT", the entity called Soul and Spirit, or "BHAVANA" provides the unchanging operating system to make the human existence a reality.

Sun's Celestial Journey - Spiritualism - Copernican Revolution : Spiritualism is the potency that brings man's essence and existence to come together to provide man the subjective and objective reality of his own existence in the physical, or material world.

Sun’s Celestial Journey – Spiritualism – Copernican Revolution : Spiritualism is the potency that brings man’s essence and existence to come together to provide man the subjective and objective reality of his own existence in the physical, or material world.

Man’s earthly existence is conditioned by constant change under the influence of Space and Time. To make Life happen, the existence has to be synchronized with the external events on which man has no control. While Earth is spinning at an amazing speed, man perceives Earth as a motionless object, and experiences the apparent motions of planets and stars. The speed of Earth’s motion is not compatible with human existence. The reality of Sun shining brightly in the sky all the time is not also helpful for human existence. Man needs alternating periods of light and darkness called day, and night. Human existence demands alternating periods of wakefulness and sleep. To experience the physical reality called existence, man needs the influence of a powerful illusion that changes the perception of reality of this world, and universe that is constantly changing, and moving. Man exists for he cannot alter the nature of this sensory experience that generates the Celestial Journey of Sun across the heavenly dome. In Indian tradition,  it is stated that the Creative Energy called “MAYA” clouds man’s sense of perception of the world experience and man has no ability to overcome the Power/Force/Energy that causes ‘ILLUSION’. The phenomena called ‘ILLUSION’ is not generated by the mind. This world experience caused by ‘ILLUSION’ has a survival value as it intends to protect man from the harsher reality of Truth. To a discerning mind it appears that man needs the guiding and regulative mechanism called Soul and Spirit to perform his living functions in a moving, and changing world. Soul establishes man’s dependence upon an external source of energy and hence Soul is always associated with the living body. The unity of man’s body and Soul could be named as the ‘God-Connection’ as this ‘Connection’ is not formulated by man’s mental, or physical work. This ‘God-Connection’ helps the Spirit to express its desire for Freedom which includes a desire to seek Freedom from the world experience called ‘Death’. If Soul and Spirit are present in the living body that exists in the earthly, material realm, it points towards the operation of the Divine Providence in this terrestrial realm. If God by the nature of His existence is present in the immanent realm, the problems of metaphysics such as Freedom, Immortality, and God’s existence do not belong to unknowable, transcendental realm. I may have to suggest that Kant could be wrong in his view about the relationship between human mind, and the world of experience. Man is fortunate for things of world experience do not always confirm to the knowing mind.

My Brahman Identity in this world is established by virtue of my birth at 2/37 Kutchery Road, Mylapore, Madras City, Chennai, Tamil Nadu(Madras State), India, the residence of Dr. Kasturi. Narayana Murthy, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Madras Medical College, my maternal  grandfather. The fact of my birth was prayerfully submitted to Lord Kapaleeswarar and this Lord known as Shiva or Rudra presides over my Life and Death both in good health or ill-health, and in Freedom, or Captivity. In the Brahman community, I belong to the ‘Smartha’ tradition established by Adi Shankara of 8th-century. This tradition permits people of my Brahman community to worship Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva with the same sense of undivided devotion and at the same time we worship other deities such as Goddess Durga(Shakti), Lord Ganesha, Lord Surya and several others.

Adi Shankaracharya was the founder of my Hindu, Brahman, Smartha tradition. This tradition establishes a belief in Human Spirit/Soul or 'ATMAN' that is essentially FREE because of its Unity with the Divine Spirit. During Life, human Spirit is dependent upon external support. Freedom is the nature of the Spirit, but in the physical world, the Spirit may face confinement in a Prison.

This tradition establishes a belief in Human Spirit/Soul or ‘ATMAN’ that is essentially FREE because of its Unity with the Divine Spirit. During Life, human Spirit is dependent upon external support. Freedom is the nature of the Spirit, but in the physical world, the Spirit may face confinement in a Prison as the Spirit and Soul exist in association with a living person.

My ‘Smartha’ tradition is largely shaped by close social interactions with members of immediate, and extended family, and to a smaller extent by interactions with the rest of the social community of Hindu faith.

The Rebbapragadas Family photo: The Brahman Smartha tradition was established in my Life due to close social interactions with members of immediate and extended family members. These members know that a Brahman Spirit is in Prison.

Spiritualism and Spirituality is a living relationship between Spirit/Soul and an external world at any given time and place. Spirit and Soul are known because of their association with a living person. Man, the spiritual being is known from the nature of his existence seeking peace, harmony, and tranquility within himself and with others in his environment and social community. I was given a personal name to reflect my Brahman-Smartha Identity and to provide me the cultural tools to establish peace, harmony, and tranquility in my living experience. One of the first lessons of Spirituality that I learned is that of the recognition of a Supreme Being who could be personified and be known as Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and other deities. The Supreme Being is ONE and at the same time it is more satisfying to worship a variety of deities who display special qualities and bestow their Mercy, Grace, and Compassion with varied flavors; each imparting a different kind of emotional feeling. In my Smartha tradition, the emotional attitude and feeling called Devotion could find its expression in various colors and each is formulated by kinds of visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile sensations. The worship of each deity requires a variation in the ritualistic tradition, physical practice, and the use of prayerful submission. The subjective, mental and body experience called devotion is revealed in a variety of forms and it gives me an opportunity to choose a kind of devotion according to my taste, and individual preference. The second lesson of  Spirituality and my Brahman upbringing is that of an attitude called ‘detachment’. I am culturally trained to get involved in action and at the same time maintain a separation between myself and the actions performed by me in the external world. I exist as a Brahman because of my ability to detach myself from the actions that I perform for any reason. The issue is not that of the motivation or drive that initiates the action. The primary concern or issue is that of the fruits of the action performed under the influence of external environmental stimuli, circumstances of time or place of action. I, as a Brahman have no Freedom not to perform action, or avoid action. I, as a Brahman have to perform actions and must not seek or desire the fruits of such actions. In the physical world, my Brahman Identity may not be amenable for verification using objective criteria. The mental attitude of ‘detachment’ is purely a subjective condition. Hence, my Brahman Identity could only be reflected in my social actions and interactions with other members of Brahman community. If such social interactions are totally eliminated, my Brahman Identity would exist only as a subjective condition with no objective findings.

A BRAHMAN SPIRIT IN PRISON:

Spirit is the aspect of human nature that desires Freedom. This sense of Freedom is expressed in Speech, and in Movement. The Freedom of Movement is essential to maintain social interactions. A person held in a prison would not have the Freedom to engage in social interactions with members of his social community. If my Spirit is held in Prison, it will not experience the Freedom of Movement. Being in a Prison relates to the problem of Freedom of Movement and it doesn’t mean avoidance of action or that of not performing action. My Brahman Identity is the source of my Self-Pride, Ego, and Arrogance which keeps my Freedom seeking Spirit in the Prison. The Brahman members of the social community may derive some pleasure and amusement by simply peering at my Brahman Spirit that is held captive in a cage; just like the children who delight themselves by looking at zoo animals.

My mother died during September, 1998, and my father died during October, 2009 in the City of Hyderabad, India while I had lived in the United States with my Brahman Spirit held in a Prison. I had no Freedom of Movement to attend their funeral or memorial service.

The evidence for the reality of my Brahman Spirit in Prison is the lack of social interactions with other members of Brahman community in the United States. There is a large Brahman community in the United States and my Spirit does not experience the Freedom of Movement to make the social interaction.

A Brahman Spirit in Prison cannot experience the Freedom of Movement to interact with other Brahman members of the social community such as seen in this photo taken at Malibu Hindu Temple.

Mr. Nadadur Sampat Kumar is a prominent member of the Hindu Brahman community. He could be aware of a Brahman Spirit in Prison that may need the Freedom of Movement to perform social actions in spite of the Brahman attitude called 'detachment'.

THE SPIRITS OF SPECIAL FRONTIER FORCE:

I had served in a multinational defense pact/alliance called Establishment No. 22 or Special Frontier Force seeking establishment of Freedom and Democracy in the Land of Tibet that was illegally occupied by the People’s Republic of China during 1950. The ‘Spirits’ of Tibetan soldiers of my military organization inhabit my consciousness. During 1986,  I had arrived in the United States desiring Freedom and Democracy. In reality, my Brahman Spirit, and the Tibetan Spirits have no Freedom of Movement as if we are held captive in a Prison. The only Freedom that I am allowed is the Freedom of Speech and that gives me the opportunity to share the physical reality with all of my readers.
